I also want to especially thank our leader, Kris Thorkelson, President and Owner of Thorwin Properties, for trusting us with this project and giving us the room to think, create and push things forward. His vision and forward-thinking continue to challenge us to raise our game, look ahead and keep moving the company into the future, whatever that future may bring.

That kind of trust matters. It gives people the confidence to bring ideas forward, try something new and build on what has already made the company successful. When leadership believes in its people, good ideas have a much better chance of becoming great ones.

Trends change, platforms change, technology changes, and algorithms seem to change about five minutes after you finally figure them out.

But one thing hasn’t changed: Great work comes from great people.

Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to learn from some incredibly talented people. Mentors who challenged me, shared what they knew, encouraged me to look at things differently, and every once in a while gave me advice I didn’t necessarily want to hear, but probably needed to.

Those lessons stick with you.

As the years go by, you also realize leadership isn’t about being the smartest person in the room. Far from it.

It’s about surrounding yourself with talented people, listening to them, trusting them to do what they do best, and giving them enough room to bring something to the table you may never have thought of yourself.

I’ve been blessed to work alongside talented individuals in the present and past such as Eduardo Florian Espinosa, Sofiya Shatalin, Syrah Bailey, Irene Tonnu and Serena Tonnu, each bringing their own perspective, creativity, strengths, personality and ideas to the table.

And that’s a pretty great table to be sitting at.

Eduardo Florian Espinosa’s recent post about the launch of the new Thorwin Properties website really brought that home for me.

The decision to rebuild our corporate website wasn’t simply about wanting something newer, shinier or more modern.

The numbers were telling us something pretty clearly: our websites had become one of our strongest sources of leads.

When roughly one out of every two leads is coming through your websites, you pay attention.

So we did.

There were meetings, presentations, ideas, feedback, changes, more ideas, more feedback, and probably a few moments where we thought we were almost finished.

We weren’t.

That’s marketing.

But somewhere between all the conversations, creative thinking, data, adjustments and the occasional “what if we tried this?” moment, everything started coming together.

And what we ended up with is something we’re genuinely proud of.

More importantly, this was never just a marketing project.

A big part of getting it right came from collaboration across the company.

Upper management brought perspective on where we’re going as an organization.

Property managers and our operations teams brought the real-world perspective of what they see and hear every day in our buildings and communities.

Marketing brought the data, strategy, creative thinking and the question that opens the door to new ideas, “What if we did it differently?”

Put all of that together and you start seeing things differently.

That kind of collaboration keeps us grounded in our industry, but it also gives us permission to look beyond it.

Sometimes the best ideas come from stepping outside the usual playbook, looking at what other industries are doing, questioning the way things have always been done, and asking whether there might be a better way.

Not different just for the sake of being different.

Better.

More useful.

More thoughtful.

More connected to the people we’re trying to serve.

That’s what forward-thinking should really be about.

And that’s exactly what you want from talented people.

You don’t hire good people simply to agree with you.

You want them asking questions.

You want them seeing things you may have missed.

You want them challenging an idea because they believe there might be a better one.

And every once in a while, you want someone to say something that makes you sit there and think,

“Well, why didn’t I think of that?”

That’s a good moment.

Because that’s how teams grow.

While technology, digital marketing and new tools continue to move at lightning speed, I still believe in something pretty old school, people matter most.

Tools can make us faster.

Data can make us smarter.

Technology can open doors.

But people bring the experience, curiosity, creativity and heart that help us decide which doors are actually worth opening.

I’m grateful for the mentors who helped shape my career over the past 15-plus years, and I’m equally grateful for the talented people I get to work with and learn from today.

The Role of Nursing Sisters
During World War I, nursing sisters played an essential role in the war effort. As the number of casualties increased, so did the demand for medical care. Many nursing sisters were part of the Canadian Army Medical Corps and were dispatched to various areas of war, including France and Belgium. They faced dire conditions, working long hours in makeshift hospitals and coping with the physical and emotional toll of war.

The Impact of Their Service
Manitoba’s nursing sisters were among the first to respond to the call for help. They left their homes and families, often traveling overseas to serve in challenging environments. Among them was Nursing Sister Margaret Lowe from Binscarth. She exemplified the bravery and dedication of her peers, providing compassionate care to soldiers in desperate need. Beyond providing medical assistance, these courageous women offered comfort to the injured, alleviating the suffering of those who had endured unimaginable trauma. Their efforts went beyond physical healing; they brought a sense of hope and humanity amidst the horrors of war.

Remembering the Fallen
The sacrifices of these nursing sisters, many of whom lost their lives while serving, are highlighted in various accounts, including the West End Dumplings blog and The Nursing Sisters of Canada. Their bravery and dedication led them to the front lines of care, and though their names may be forgotten in broader narratives of war, they deserve a place of honour in our collective memory.  Margaret Lowe’s connection to the historical site at 753 Wolseley Avenue adds a personal touch to this remembrance. This address represents not just a location, but a community that supported these courageous women as they prepared to serve.

Legacy and Recognition
Today, we recognize the significant legacy of Manitoba's nursing sisters. Their contributions laid the groundwork for the modern nursing profession and underscored the vital role of women in military service. By commemorating their sacrifices, we honour not only those who fell but also the essential contributions of nurses throughout history.

As we reflect on the legacy of Manitoba's fallen nursing sisters from World War I, let us remember their courage and dedication. They left an indelible mark on both the nursing profession and the hearts of those they served. Their stories remind us of the strength of women in wartime and the importance of acknowledging all who serve, in whatever capacity they may be. In times of war, it’s difficult to comprehend why these events happen. History feels as if it's repeating itself, but should it? One thing remains clear: as human beings, we persevere and find ways to support one another in times of need. Thorwin Properties, a Winnipeg-based property management company, recently demonstrated this spirit of compassion by helping a Ukrainian couple, Mykola and Valentyna, escape the war in their home country.

One thing remains clear: as human beings, we persevere and find ways to support one another in times of need. Thorwin Properties, a Winnipeg-based property management company, recently demonstrated this spirit of compassion by helping a Ukrainian couple, Mykola and Valentyna, escape the war in their home country.

Having worked at Thorwin Properties for about a year, I’ve witnessed firsthand the company’s deep commitment to its staff and residents. Thorwin exemplifies its core values of respect, accountability, forward-thinking, and a one-team approach. When my Marketing Manager asked me to write this article, I was eager. As a Ukrainian myself, I felt a strong desire to share this important story and shed light on the current situation in my homeland.

This is the story of Mykola and Valentyna, a couple who survived a harrowing five-day journey to escape war-torn Ukraine.

A Heart-Wrenching Departure

Mykola and Valentyna are from Kryvyi Rih, one of Ukraine's largest cities, located in the center of the country. The distance from Ukraine to Canada is over 7,745 km (4,812 miles), and leaving meant saying goodbye to their home, relatives, and friends, with only prayers for their loved ones' safety and the hope of one day reuniting.

Valentyna, 72, and Mykola, 76, are retired. Valentyna worked as a government official, while Mykola was an engineer. Like many parents, they worked hard throughout their lives to provide a better future for their children. They have an older son, who remains in Ukraine to defend their country, and a daughter who lives in Winnipeg, Canada.

When I asked about their son, Valentyna told me, “Our son said he was glad we were no longer there. He can now focus on defending our country, knowing we’re safe.”

Their daughter, Raissa, had immigrated to Canada with their help many years ago. Valentyna explained, “We invested all of our savings into helping her come to Canada. We’ve always believed that if you want something, you must work for it.”

Escaping a War Zone

Valentyna and Mykola had visited Canada twice before, but when the war broke out, they initially decided to stay in Ukraine. “Our daughter asked us to come, but we wanted to stay,” Valentyna said. However, as the situation rapidly deteriorated, their daughter-in-law offered to help them leave for Poland, from where they could fly to Canada. “We had just two hours to gather our documents and pack a small bag,” Valentyna recalled. They took only the bare essentials: a pair of underwear each and their medication.

The couple faced a chaotic scene at the train station. “It was like a scene from a World War II movie,” Valentyna said. “The station was packed with people trying to escape, and we were lucky to be right next to the train door when it opened.” The train, meant for four passengers per section, was crammed with twelve. The journey to L’viv took 17 hours, spent in the dark with no lights to avoid detection. “The train staff were kind enough to make us tea,” Valentyna said, “but it was terrifying.”

Once in L’viv, volunteers offered food and water, and the couple stayed overnight in a shelter. From there, they traveled to Poland, grateful for the help they received along the way.

A New Beginning in Canada

When they finally arrived in Winnipeg on March 6th, their daughter welcomed them into her home, where they stayed with Raissa, her husband Chris, and their two children. Despite the warmth of family, Valentyna and Mykola felt uncomfortable relying on them. “We asked them to help us find our own apartment,” Valentyna said. Although they had their pension from Ukraine, it wasn’t enough to cover rent.

That’s when Chris reached out to his contacts at Thorwin Properties, where he received life-changing news. “When he told us that Kris Thorkelson, President and Owner of Thorwin Properties, had offered us three months of free rent, I couldn’t believe it. I started crying,” Valentyna recalled. The company even donated a new sofa for their apartment.

Valentyna expressed how overwhelmed they were by the kindness they received. “We have everything we need for now, including clothes and shoes, thanks to donations. We feel incredibly grateful. It’s hard to imagine how fortunate we are, especially when we talk to our son, who is still in Ukraine, and tell him how well we are being treated here.”

The Road Ahead

Although they are still adjusting, Valentyna and Mykola are determined to make the most of their new life in Canada. They’ve already signed up for free English lessons and are learning more about their Winnipeg community. “We take walks every day, learning how to take the bus and exploring the city,” Valentyna said. “We want to stay here and be close to our daughter.”

This blog post holds special meaning to me, not only because of my own connection to Ukraine but because it reminds me of the strength and resilience of people like Mykola and Valentyna. Their journey was not easy, but they are now safe, supported, and hopeful for the future.
