Founded in 1894, The Winnipeg Humane Society is the oldest animal welfare organization in Canada and has helped over 10,000 animals a year. Devoted to protecting animals from suffering, this non-profit, registered charity is funded solely by the support of the community and corporate businesses. With nearly 60% of it coming from donations and events, fundraisers such as the Treasure Box are vital to keeping the shelter up and running.

Supporting WHS doesn’t only mean supporting an animal shelter. You are also supporting:

• • The clinic is located at the Humane Society and does up to 40 surgeries a day (emergency and spay/neutering).

  • WHS’s very own behavior department, where dogs (and cats) are trained for the “real world” once they leave the shelter.

• Foster: Foster Parents provide care and love to animals who may be too young, sick, injured, under-socialized, or emotionally stressed to be in a shelter. It was one a year ago this month in April that Thorwin Properties (thorwin.ca) teamed up with Peg City Car Co-op (pegcitycarcoop.ca). Designating one of its first parking stalls at 190 Smith Street (190smithstreetapartments.ca) and another near our downtown Winnipeg apartments at 250 Broadway Avenue (250broadwayavenueapartments.ca). 

This community partnership program not only helps reduce our carbon footprint but benefits Thorwin’s residents, allowing them to use a car when they need one. A social and environmental choice that supports community transit and environmental goals. It truly gives our residents the benefits of driving without the hassle and cost of ownership. As of April 4, 2022, we are excited to announce that we have added another Peg City Car Co-op for our residents at 812 Wolseley Avenue (812wolseleyavenueapartments.ca) and 826 Wolseley Avenue.

Peg City Car Co-op started back in July 2007, a group of five forward-thinking volunteers who discussed the idea of establishing a carshare program in Winnipeg. Officially, they launched their first three vehicles on June 24, 2011. Peg City Car Co-op has grown to more than 70 vehicles and 2,500-plus members.

Carsharing is a trend and a solution that is truly convenient. Members of this innovative car rental concept don’t have to worry about car payments, insurance, and the other maintenance cost that come with owning a vehicle. We are ver excited to team up with Peg City Car Co-op. We are not only trying to reduce traffic congestion but our carbon footprint as well. Fewer cars, emissions, pollution = supporting a cleaner sustainable future.

My wife is a member. I had mentioned our community partnership with Peg City Car Co-op and she enrolled within the week. She loves the simple and easy payment options, the ability to log into her account, choose a car from a specific location on their map and the options of renting a car, truck, van, hybrid and electric vehicles is enticing.

We have recently partnered with the Landlord Credit Bureau (LCB), an independent reporting agency, whose goal is to improve the lives of landlords, property managers, and residents. The Landlord Credit Bureau's reporting platform empowers landlords to motivate and reward responsible residence behaviour. At the same time, residents can now build a positive leasing record with LCB while using their monthly leasing expenses to build credit.

How does it work?

Once the landlord and the resident are signed up, the Landlord Credit Bureau tracks and reports credit information through credit bureaus like Equifax. The resident builds a positive rental history which improves their credit report when payments are made on time.

Up until now, responsible residents paid their rent without the credit building benefits LCB enables. Now, Thorwin Properties can reward these residents with a positive trade line on their credit reports. Good credit is important for your future. By having your on-time rent payments reported to credit bureaus, you can improve your credit report and help repair any poor credit history.

What are the benefits?

The LBC benefits both our residents and us. Responsible residents benefit from being able to use their rent payments to improve their credit reports and build a positive tenant record they can use to receive priority when applying for their apartment. Landlord Credit Bureau also empowers Thorwin Properties to reward their responsible residents, motivate on-time payment habits and introduce consequences for delinquencies. Through LCB, Thorwin Properties have the same capabilities that other credit grantors always had with major credit bureaus. 

Develop a Positive Tenant History: In the past, residents rarely receive extra benefits for paying rent on time, taking care of the place, and just being a good resident. When we report timely payments to LCB, residents benefit! LCB helps develop positive resident history, improve credit reports, and establish a verified rental history.
