Enjoy the universal language of dance under the prairie skies as the incredible talents from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Company, Professional Division, and Recreational Division gather in one place to deliver performances that highlight their passion for dance.
Starting at 6:15pm, the activities for each night will be followed by the main performance at 7:30pm, with the night wrapping up around 9pm. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet Company artists will be performing Bleecker & 6th choreographed by Stephan Azulay, which “crackles with energy and infectious joy.” The Senior-level Professional Division students will blend strong classical technique with humorous storytelling in the Fairy Doll pas de trois, the Diana and Acteon grand pas de deux from La Esmeralda, and Adios choreographed for First Steps 2023. And don’t miss the Recreational Division’s Intensive Training Program students performing the remounting of Nicole Kepp‘s Can Can, which was a crowd favourite at Dance Spectrum.
So come and be part of the story this summer and witness firsthand how the dancers within our walls continue to Live the Dream. Enjoy the beauty of the outdoors mixed with the beauty of dance and create unforgettable memories with your loved ones.

International Women’s Day is an annual global holiday celebrated on March 8th that recognizes the social, cultural, and economic achievements of women. It's a time for everyone to act and advocate for women's rights, including issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence against women.
But how did this day become a movement, and why is it so important?
During the 1900s, women everywhere didn’t have much of a role in society. They couldn’t vote, join the parliament, have access to legal support, get proper education, get divorced, get equal pay in the working field, and weren't allowed in certain public areas.
Growing tired and frustrated with the current rules put in place, women from all over became more vocal and active for change. Causing some women, like Emmeline Pankhurst from the UK, to respond by creating the Women’s Social and Political Union in 1903 or causing others to form rallies like the 15,000 women march in NYC in 1908.
In 1910, the International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen, having over 100 women from 17 countries attending. They proposed that every country, every year, should celebrate women and their movement on the same day, sparking the result of International Women’s Day.
Of course, the change didn’t happen overnight. And while the spark of the global holiday was a milestone, women continued to protest and fight. Events such as the First World War would also contribute to the women’s suffrage movement as it changed how people viewed women in the working field and workforce.
Eventually, the United Nations recognized International Women’s Day, with them declaring the first annual theme for the day in 1996.

Current Day
In today’s day and age, many more countries are starting to support International Women's Day and celebrate March 8th. This year’s campaign theme for International Women’s Day is #EmbraceEquity. While gender equality is essential, gender equity is just as important. The goal for this year is to get the world talking about why equal opportunities aren't enough. People start from different places, so true inclusion requires equitable action.
Here is How You Can Celebrate International Women’s Day
- Send your female friends or family members a text to let them know you appreciate them.
- Educate yourself on gender inequalities.
- Speak out against sexism and misogyny when you encounter it.
- Snap a photo striking the IWD 2023 pose and share it online using the #EmbraceEquity hashtag! The stance signifies hugging yourself to show solidarity.
- Use the IWD free resources online at https://www.internationalwomensday.com/Resources
- Support women-owned businesses in your community!
- Donate to charities that make it their mission to support women, either locally or globally. Consider donating to organizations like Women for Women International, Manitoba Women’s Institute, and The Nellie McClung Foundation.
“Collective activism is what drives change. When we embrace equity, we embrace diversity, and we embrace inclusion.”

What do we need to buy?
-
We need to plan our shopping to avoid chaos. First, check your wishlists all around online platforms. Then, determine what is urgent to buy and create a separate list for each store.
-
Don't forget to check around the house – broken mirrors and hangers are good examples of what is good to buy for less.
-
Next step – visit your favourite stores online and offline, so you know about new deals and collections. Also, mark current prices and compare them between stores.
-
If you’re doing online shopping, search for additional promotional codes to save money on your purchase or shipping costs.
-
Check your calendar and see if you have any upcoming celebrations, including Christmas. Black Friday is a perfect time to shop for gifts.
Where do we shop?
We have two main ways of shopping – online and offline. Online shopping is easier since you don't need to waste time waiting in lines. This way, the only problem might be website over traffic and crash, which is temporary.
Offline shopping has bonuses, as you can try the clothing on and check if every item you buy is in good condition.
Here are a few tips on smooth in-person shopping:
-
Take sanitizer and a mask with you.
-
Wear comfortable clothing.
-
Prepare bags and take a big purse.
-
Bring snacks, and bottled water, and pack a sandwich.
-
Search for parking in the area before shopping day.
-
Create a list of items and stores, and check store hours.
-
The evening will be busy, so try shopping in the early hours.
-
Take a friend with you to check stores for each other.
-
Create a money limit. You can take cash only to avoid unexpected expenses.
Remember: the roads will be busy. Drive safe and check the weather.
How to avoid huge lines?
The easiest way is to shop online. In case you want to go to the store, here are some tips:
-
Try clothing a few days before and go to the store just to purchase.
-
Take a friend who can wait in line for you.
-
Ask if you can put the item on hold if there is a huge line.
-
Prioritize your purchases and shop regarding store hours.
Tip: Beware of final sales!
Take note: due to huge sales, your online shipments may be delayed. Create a plan B if you shop for gifts.

On November 11th at 11 am, Canadians everywhere pause in a moment of silence to honour and remember those who fought for our freedom and continue to serve Canada during times of conflict.
Remembrance day, also referred to as Armistice Day in the past, is a statutory Canadian Holiday first observed in 1919 throughout the British Commonwealth. The holiday commemorates the truth agreement that ended the First World War on Monday, November 11th at 11 am.
However, COVID-19 has negatively impacted the celebration of this day, with fewer Canadians attending memorial ceremonies and events. It is more important now than ever that we support our military and veterans integrated back into civilian life by showing our support, even if we cannot attend events.
Here are some ways you can support veterans on this remembrance day:

Ways to remember and support Veterans
Listen, understand, and share
- Taking an active role in remembering is one way to say thank you to local Canadian veterans!
- Sharing online and spreading the word about celebrating Remembrance Day through social media.
- Invite a veteran or a Canadian Armed forces member as a guest speaker in a community event, classroom, or school.
- Watch and listen. There are many interviews and documentaries that can help further inform you about past events.
Be active
- Wear a poppy to show your support on November 11th.
- Attend a remembrance day ceremony. See https://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/events to find a ceremony near you!
- Pause for two minutes in silence at 11 am on November 11th. Participate in a commemorative ceremony.
- Visit your local cemetery and pay respects to a veteran’s grave.

Become a legion member!
The Royal Canadian legion is the largest Veteran support and community service organization in Canada, helping thousands of military and RCMP veterans and their families a year. The organization also aids those transitioning back into civilian life by benefiting from housing and care programs, financial assistance, and mental health support.
Becoming a legion member means:
- Your membership will allow the organization to improve the lives of veterans by giving them access to free services, support, and financial assistance for them and their families. Free advocacy to help Veterans get their deserved disability benefits
- Free advocacy to help Veterans get their deserved disability benefits
- The membership allows for campaigns and programs like the Poppy Campaign to continue.

- Donate clothing to places such as Siloam Mission, Value Village, Main Street Project, the Salvation Army, and other thrift shops that support homeless/at-risk veterans in their community.
- Donate to food banks like the Winnipeg Harvest and the Main Street Project.

Volunteer
- Unfortunately, many veterans end up without a home after they have served their time in the military. Volunteering at events or shelters is another way to help them in your community.
- Do it-yourself fundraising. Create an event in your community and raise funds for charities that give back to veterans in need.
- Help volunteer in several community events hosted for veterans, like ‘Walk for the Wounded’ https://www.walkforthewounded.ca/ or the Canada Army Run! https://armyrun.ca/

]]>The post Thorwin Properties will be a Silver Sponsor for the Winnipeg Humane Society’s Treasure Box Campaign from October 10th – 17th, 2022. appeared first on Thorwin Properties Blog.
]]>
Founded in 1894, The Winnipeg Humane Society is the oldest animal welfare organization in Canada and has helped over 10,000 animals a year. Devoted to protecting animals from suffering, this non-profit, registered charity is funded solely by the support of the community and corporate businesses. With nearly 60% of it coming from donations and events, fundraisers such as the Treasure Box are vital to keeping the shelter up and running.
As a corporate company leading the property management industry, our mission is to provide quality living, and professional service, and to forge long-term relationships. As well as being pet-friendly, this is why Thorwin Properties partnered up with WHS and became the Silver Sponsor for their Treasure Box Fundraiser this year for October 2022!
But what is the Treasure Box Fundraiser?
- The Winnipeg Humane Society Treasure Box Campaign features a collection of local delights in support of your Winnipeg Humane Society.
- It has been the alternative to hosting in-person fundraisers during COVID.
- The Boxes feature $300 worth of humanly sourced products from local companies in Manitoba!
- The WHS Treasure Box Campaign not only helps our animals in need but also provides business for local Manitoba-based companies!
- All boxes are sold online. Limited edition boxes will be on sale for $200 each.
- Once purchased, the boxes will be delivered straight to you through one of the WHS Sponsors, AMJ Campbell Winnipeg!
Are you interested in supporting The Humane Society? Head over to https://winnipeghumanesociety.akaraisin.com/ui/whstreasurebox/ on October 10th – 17th to purchase your box!

Supporting WHS doesn’t only mean supporting an animal shelter. You are also supporting:
-
- The clinic is located at the Humane Society and does up to 40 surgeries a day (emergency and spay/neutering).
- One of the largest lost pet registries in the Province of Manitoba.
- WHS’s very own behavior department, where dogs (and cats) are trained for the “real world” once they leave the shelter.
- The multiple education programs include Be a Tree which teaches kids to approach animals carefully and be aware of body language, read with furry companions, kid Camps, and more!
- An animal organization that can enforce the Animal Care Act of Manitoba, prosecuting offenders.
- The funding for scholarship opportunities for young people aged 15-18 years.
If unable to purchase a Treasure Box for this month’s campaign, no worries! Here are three other ways people in our communities can help:

- Donate: Choose between making a one-time donation, a monthly donation, or a Commemorative donation! WHS gives you many options for donating, which doesn’t always include giving money! Donating food, supplies, used cars, and more is also accepted! Find out more ways to donate at https://winnipeghumanesociety.ca/ways-to-help/donate/.
- Volunteer: WHS depends on its volunteers, and because of them, The Humane Society is still here. Look through volunteer vacancies, select what type of volunteering you’d like to do, and apply! Companies can also choose to do volunteering as a corporate team to help WHS and improve teamwork among employees. Learn more at https://winnipeghumanesociety.ca/ways-to-help/volunteer/.
- Foster: Foster Parents provide care and love to animals who may be too young, sick, injured, under-socialized, or emotionally stressed to be in a shelter. Being in a home is the best place to receive care, and with WHS’s Forster Program, people who aren’t looking to adopt can still help save lives! Visit https://winnipeghumanesociety.ca/ways-to-help/volunteer/application-volunteer-vacancies/whs-foster-program/ for more information on becoming a foster parent.
Without the help of sponsors, donations, fundraisers, and the community’s support, shelters such as the Winnipeg Humane Society cannot do the things they do. Please consider supporting the Treasure Box Campaign and other future events the WHS will hold!

Recovering from addiction is a process that takes time and effort. It's not always easy, but it does get better with each day. Recovery Day is a national movement committed to mobilizing and organizing Canadians in recovery from addiction and addiction-related problems. The mission is to build awareness, challenge societal stigma, and celebrate recovery, and the essential role it plays in improving life for individuals, families, communities, cities, and countries.
Thousands of Canadians have participated in the recovery celebration to build awareness and encourage more people to seek help. Since 2012, this has resulted in an increase in people who are seeking treatment and recovering from addiction. A large network of people in recovery, families, service providers and entire communities have come together to celebrate RECOVERY. While there is no cure for addiction, there is a solution. Together, we build awareness, challenge societal stigma, and above all else show our community that recovery is real, attainable, and sustainable

]]>The post The Winnipeg International Jazz Festival appeared first on Thorwin Properties Blog.

Jazz is known as one of the United State’s greatest gifts. Originating in African American communities of New Orleans and Louisiana from the late 19th to earlier 20th century, the Jazz music genre has roots in blues, ragtime, and a forward momentum called a swing. Many recognize its origins as a form of expression Black Artists used to fight against systemic oppression.
Every June, a non-profit group known as Jazz Winnipeg organizes the Winnipeg International Jazz Festival, which features Canadian/International musicians in several jazz genres. The goal is to further our appreciation for jazz music in Winnipeg’s cultural community. Many venues hold ticketed events for performances at the Burton Cummings Theatre and the Canadian Museum of Human Rights, but free concerts are available in the Old Market Square.
After almost a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, here is just a small list of artists to expect this year:
-
Canadian Museum of Human Rights, June 14th at 9:30 pm: Singer/Composer/Theatrical Performer Rene Marie and Pianist/Vocalist/Composer Dawn Clement will perform a variety of elements from R&B, Folk, and even classical in their jazz performance at the John Buhler Hall.
-
CMHR, June 14th at 10:30 pm: Ernesto Cervini’s Tetrahedron is one of the most exciting electric drummers in North America. He has been doing Canadian Modern Jazz for the past ten years. His performance this year will feature two top Canadian improvisers playing a groovy, energetic trip!
-
CMHR Patio, June 14th at noon: Adele M. Wilding is a contemporary jazz vocalist with rich, soul-inflected vocals. Joining Wilding in performance are two of Winnipeg’s Finest Musicians. This trio will sure fill the air with smooth, hypnotic Jazz.
-
Cinematheque at Artspace, June 16th at 6 pm: Jasmine and the Jazzmen are four jazz students from McGill University and the University of Manitoba playing a traditional mix of Jazz, Folk, and Pop music.
-
King Head’s Pub, June 17th at 10:30 pm: Witch Prophet is a Queer, Ethiopian/Eritrean singer and songwriter with her music consisting of Loops, Raps, Harmonies, Hip-Hop, Soul, and Jazz inspired beats. Some songs are in various languages like English, Amharic, and Tigrinya.
-
The Burton Cummings Theatre, June 17th at 8 pm: Go_A, winners of the 2020 Ukrainian National Selection of the Eurovision Song Contest, had their song “SHUM” become the first Ukrainian song ever to hit the Billboard Top 200 charts. The Balaklava Blues, specializing in Ethno-Shock, Folk-Noir, and Slavic Soul, is pairing with the Ukrainian band. Falling between a traditional song cycle and a full-blown multimedia techno show, the duo fuses Ukrainian polyphony and other folk traditions with EDM, Hip Hop, and Jazz. Explore the never-ending blues that have long emerged from the Ukrainian steppe.
-
Royal Albert Arms, June 18th at 9:30 pm: Toronto-based Jazz vocalist Joanna Majoko established her reputation in Canada by performing in other Canadian jazz festivals. Majoko immersed herself in Jazz at the University of Manitoba, where she honed her talent as a vocalist, composer, and bandleader before moving to Toronto. Her performance will feature the Jeremy Ledbetter Trio, a Canadian contemporary jazz band consisting of a pianist, a drummer, and a bassist.
-
Old Market Square, June 18th at 11:30 pm: Apollo Suns is a Canadian-based band who have created a refreshing live performance combining instrumental Jazz, Rock, and Psychedelic music. Awarded “Instrumental Artist of the Year” in 2018 at the Western Canadian Music Awards, Apollo Suns is not afraid to pave its musical path.
These are just a few skilled and amazing Jazz-influenced artists performing in this year’s International Winnipeg Jazz Festival. Please check out their website at https://www.jazzwinnipeg.com/2022-artists to see all the artists and their stories.

The most popular and recommended in Winnipeg are:

Amenities include a driving net, pro shop, cart rentals, locker rentals, snack shack, and more! Camping

Give yourself and your family a break and unplug for the long weekend by camping! Many provincial parks around Winnipeg are opening up their campgrounds this spring. Birds Hill Provincial Park will always be a favourite for city dwellers because of its location and artificial beaches. However, campgrounds can get booked, so it’s best to reserve a spot early! In addition to camping, these parks also offer many fun outdoor family activities like hiking, outdoor biking, canoeing, and much more! Goldeye’s Baseball Game
One of the best things about A Goldeye’s game is that you don’t have to be a fan to go! Located at Shaw Park near the Canadian Museum of Human Rights, these ball games have an extremely family-friendly atmosphere with many amenities available. There is plenty to keep the kids occupied. A playground and other activities held during the innings (breaks) of the game are just a few. The staff, mascots, and announcers always try to engage the audience by interacting with the crowd, hosting contests, giveaways, and more entertainment!
Shaw Park also has a sufficient number of options for food, which is another reason for people to go. Mostly Manitoban comfort food, their choices include fluffy pretzels, craft beer, mini perogies, authentic BBQ, freshly squeezed lemonade, and more! Depending on the day or week, Shaw Park displays fireworks at the end of the game. The Goldeyes Team’s next game is May 19th, so be sure to buy your tickets – click here.
